Three Maze Algorithms Compared
The Recursive Backtracker (depth-first search) carves long, winding corridors through the grid. Solvers experience a strong sense of direction and few dead ends, making it the most satisfying algorithm for medium-difficulty mazes. It is the default for a reason.
Prim's algorithm grows the maze outward from a random seed cell, creating dense networks of short branches and dead ends. Wall-following strategies fail completely against Prim-generated mazes — it is the go-to choice for impossible-feeling puzzles. Our "impossible" difficulty preset uses Prim by default.
Kruskal's algorithm merges random spanning trees, producing shorter average solution paths and a more uniform texture throughout the grid. It is the easiest of the three to solve and works well for kids or beginner-level mazes where you want solvability to feel achievable.
