Hard and expert sudoku puzzles can't be cracked by scanning alone. Here are the core techniques you'll need, roughly in order of complexity.

Hidden Singles: A number that can only fit in one cell of a row, column, or box — even if that cell has other candidates.
Naked Pairs: Two cells in a unit containing exactly the same two candidates — those candidates can be eliminated from all other cells in the unit.
Locked Candidates (Pointing/Claiming): When a candidate in a box is confined to one row or column, it can be removed from that row/column elsewhere.
X-Wing: A pattern where a candidate appears in exactly two cells of two different rows, and the cells line up in the same two columns. Eliminations follow.
Swordfish: The three-row version of X-Wing. Harder to spot but devastatingly effective.
XY-Wing: A three-cell chain using bi-value cells to force eliminations on common peers.
